Individuals under the age of 19 are required to take driver education. If you have graduated or you are 19 or older, please enroll in an adult program. Granite School District cannot serve individuals who are not enrolled in Granite School District.

OBTAINING A LEARNER'S PERMIT

You may obtain your entry-level learner permit to drive if you are at least 15 years of age:

  • Schedule a learner permit appointment at the Driver License Office
  • Your photo will be taken, and you must pass a vision test.
  • Provide proof of identity.  Required Documentation
  • Parent/legal guardian must sign for financial responsibility (17 and under only)
  • Must pass the written knowledge test.

If you are 15, 16, or 17 years old, the learner permit entitles you to operate a regular motor vehicle only if a licensed driving instructor, parent, legal guardian or a licensed driver who is 21 years of age or older is occupying the seat beside you. Be sure you know all driving restrictions for this age group.

If you are 18 years or older, the learner permit entitles you to operate a regular motor vehicle only if a licensed driver who is 21 years of age or older is occupying the seat beside you.

If you are 19 years and older, driver education is not required. Must enroll in an adult-only program.

OBTAINING A DRIVER'S LICENSE

If coming from another state with a certificate of completion, that certificate may not be accepted. Contact the Driver's License Division for confirmation.

Drivers 16, 17 and 18 years of age still in high school:

  • Must pass a written test and apply for a learner's permit
  • Must hold the Utah learner permit for a minimum of 6 months
  • Must complete a driver education course
  • Must complete 40 hours of practice driving (10 at night) with a licensed adult
  • Must have a parent's signature on the application
  • Must pass a driving skills test

Drivers 19 years of age: (Must enroll with an adult-only program. Driver Ed is not required)

  • Must pass a written test and apply for a learner's permit
  • Must complete a driver education course or hold a Utah learner permit for a minimum of 90 days and have completed 40 hours of practice driving (10 at night)
  • Must pass a driving skills test

Disclosure Statement

Instruction includes behind-the-wheel, observation, and multiple car driving range. By registering on this scheduler, parents/guardians acknowledge that they have reviewed and understand the information contained herein, and that they have been advised, cautioned, and warned of the risk of injuries associated with participation in Drivers Education activities. They are fully aware that participation in such activities exposes students to the risk of injury, ranging from, minor, to severe, including but not limited to: sprains, fractures, partial or complete impairment of limbs, brain injury, paralysis, and even death. Parents/guardians understand that teacher instruction, cautions, and protective equipment provided do not eliminate these risks. Parents/guardians have addressed any questions or concerns with the teacher or other school officials. Having been so cautioned and warned, parents/guardians allow their student to participate in Driver Education, and they do so with full knowledge and understanding of the risks involved.

 

Behind-the-Wheel Instruction: Parents/guardians understand that the six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction will be scheduled directly with my instructor. Parents/guardians acknowledge that arriving late to or missing any driving session or range activity may result in consequences. Parents/guardians also understand that students are required to practice driving regularly with a parent or guardian and must complete 40 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours at night. 

 

IMPORTANT: If a student does NOT complete ALL road drives within 90 DAYS of the class end date that student will have to redo everything including taking the class again, paying the fee again, redoing the ranges and road drives, etc. Sign up for road drives as soon as you start the class. No extension for road drives will be given for students that are having trouble signing up for Road Drives. Drivers Ed is a PASS/FAIL course. Students must achieve a minimum of 80% to pass. The FEE for the class will NOT be refunded if a student drove at least once (road drives/ranges). At minimum, students must obtain their permit from the DLD in the first 30 days of the class. Students take the final Driving Skills Test at the DLD.
